The Prince and Princess of Wales are very close to this project, which trains young people to become coaches, as Coach Core was launched by The Royal Foundation – of which they are at the helm – in 2012.
At the time, Prince Harry was also leading the Foundation and, like the Prince and Princess of Wales, was keen on supporting this initiative given his strong belief – channelled in the Invictus Games – in the part sport can play in bringing communities together and improving mental health.
Speaking of the project in 2016, the Duke of Sussex said: “By training the next generation of coaches to put the child first and the sport second, we hope the ripple effect of positive experiences in sport are felt by their participants in their communities.”
Coach Core was launched in response of the London riots which broke out in August 2012, but also awanted to capture the Olympic spirits as the UK capital had, on that same summer, hosted the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The programme has since become an independent charity stretching across 17 different sites nationwide and has supported more than 750 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds start meaningful careers with sports coaching apprenticeships.
