'Just astounding!' Liz Truss in freefall as Brexit voters 'are now favouring' Labour Party

Liz Truss’ electoral base has considerably shrunk with Brexit voters defecting from the Conservative Party to the Labour Party, a professor of politics said, reducing the Conservatives’ chances of winning the next General Election. Pr Eric Kaufmann from Birkbeck College said the Prime Minister focused too much attention on pleasing Tory MPs rather than Conservative voters during this summer’s Tory leadership contest. As a result, she has created a gap between the interests of Tory MPs and the electoral base that Boris Johnson secured in 2019 when he won the General Election by a landslide.

When asked whether Liz Truss is now safe, Pr Kaufmann said: “There are mechanisms that are being talked about. So, I’m not sure she’s as safe as she thinks she is – although I’m not sure she does think that.

“I think it speaks to a deeper problem, which is that in a way, there’s a real disconnect between the business liberals who constitute the majority of Tory MPs and the Tory voters, who are culturally conservative.

“And it’s that disconnect that we’re seeing. Voters are looking at Truss and they’re just saying: ‘She doesn’t offer anything to me’ – particularly Brexit voters, who are now more favouring the Labour Party than the Conservatives.”

“That is just astounding,” he added.

Elaborating on his claim, Pr Kaufmann said: “Essentially, if you look at the opinion. For example, do you want immigration to decline or increase? Only seven percent of Conservative voters in 2019 said they want immigration to increase.

“And yet that’s exactly what Liz Truss proposed.

“You could look at shrinking of state. Shrinking of state is at six percent position in the national electorate – and yet, that is what Liz Truss campaigned on.”
