Sky News’ host Trevor Phillips questioned John Bercow’s decision to change allegiances to the Labour Party. He pointed that he can’t name a single policy from the party under Sir Keir Starmer. Mr Bercow said that Sir Keir “is vastly preferable to Boris Johnson” because of the opposition leader’s “vision” for society.
Mr Bercow said: “The real issue is who has the vision of a more equitable society, who thirsts to deliver social mobility, who wants to better the lot of people less fortunate?
“On that, Keir Starmer is vastly preferable to Boris Johnson.”
Mr Phillips rebuked: “You’ve talked about Labour’s values and policies.
“I have to confess, I’ve been doing this programme for some weeks now, and I have yet to drag anything that looks like a policy out of a Labour spokesperson.”
A senior government source said Mr Bercow’s move “will surprise nobody.”
The source added that the move drives home the point that “Labour is still the party of Remain”.
