Jeremy Hunt will address MPs in the House of Commons today, the Treasury has confirmed. The newly-minted Chancellor has two appearances scheduled today as the Conservative leadership bids to calm the country’s financial situation. Conservatives and the general public will hope he can deliver a significant enough departure from Kwasi Kwarteng to re-stabilise the economy.
What time will Jeremy Hunt speak today?
Mr Hunt will make two official addresses today, the Treasury has announced.
He is expected to speak the nation late morning. Although timings are yet to be confirmed, it is expected his statement will come at 11am.
He then plans to address MPs in the House of Commons at 3.30pm ahead of his medium-term fiscal plan.
The plan is hoped to undo many of the damages caused by Mr Kwarteng’s mini-budget and support “fiscal sustainability”.
Today’s scheduled appearances follow a weekend media blitz, where Mr Hunt aimed to assuage markets spooked by weeks of financial turmoil.
And they come ahead of a larger fiscal package teased by the new Chancellor to help re-balance the UK’s economy.
The contents of that package won’t become public knowledge until October 31, but Mr Hunt has spoken about his plans over the last couple of days.
Today’s announcement will reportedly unveil new tax raises and spending cuts to help cut the Government’s deficit.
Speaking to the BBC’s Laura Keunssberg over the weekend, he said departments would have to “find more efficiencies” than planned, while some taxes would go up.
He said: “We are going to have to take some very difficult decisions, both on spending and on tax.
“Spending is not going to increase by as much as people hoped and indeed we’re going have to ask all Government departments to find more efficiencies than they had planned.”
