He has continued to refuse to answer questions in case he incriminates himself. But the inquiry rejected this position and demanded he appear as a witness. Paul Greaney QC told the Manchester Arena Inquiry: “We understand that he is not currently in the country and there is no indication as to when he may return. Ismail Abedi clearly has important evidence to give and we urge him, today, to make contact with the inquiry legal team, either directly or through his legal team.”

The inquiry has also heard a friend of Salman Abedi, Ahmed Taghdi, who was also issued with a legal order to attend court, tried to leave the country on Monday and was subsequently arrested.

He’s currently in custody and will be brought to the inquiry to give evidence later this week.

Evidence covering the “background and radicalisation” of Salman Abedi will start to be heard as part of chapter 13 of the inquiry.

On May 22, 2017 at 10.31pm, Abedi detonated a device in a backpack as spectators were leaving an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena.

The attack killed 22 people and injured hundreds of others.
