Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi said Iraqi security forces have captured Sami Jasim on Twitter on Monday. Sami is a high-ranking member of Islamic State who is in charge of the group’s finance. He is also the deputy of leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was killed on October 27 2019.

Mr Al-Kadhimi said: “While our ISF heroes focused on securing the elections, their INIS colleagues were conducting a complex external operation to capture Sami Jasim, who was in charge of Daesh finance, and a deputy of Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi.

“Long live Iraq, and our brave heroes.”

He did not provide further details on the Iraqi operation.
