A quintessential Australian farm building served as the inspiration for one of the nation’s most unique country homes.

Victorian architect Ross MacKinnon created Orana, a striking four-bedroom in Killingworth, 117 kilometres north-west of Melbourne CBD, to look like a modern woolshed for the property’s previous owners in 2008.

Mr MacKinnon, from Ancona near Mansfield, used authentic agricultural materials such as galvanised iron and recycled timber in the farmhouse façade to ensure it blends seamlessly with its rural surroundings.

Stone and timber feature walls carry that rustic look inside the single-storey home, which boasts contemporary comforts such as open-plan living spaces, quirky chandeliers, a designer kitchen and freestanding bathtubs.

Floor-to-ceiling windows that wrap around the rear stream sunlight into every room, thanks to the house’s north-facing position which keeps it bright and airy from dawn until dusk.

Based around the idea of creating unity between the home and its landscape, Orana has been carefully crafted to bring a sense of outdoor living inside.

Spread throughout the house are two living spaces, a dining area, a study, a bathroom and multiple outdoor decks, as well as four bedrooms, the largest of which has an ensuite, a walk-in wardrobe and its own private terrace.
