The royal lodgings were located in the upper ward, while the lower ward contained domestic buildings such as the kitchen and the 30.4 metre long Great Hall.

Unfortunately, many of the building plans were never finished, and the interior buildings no longer survive.

According to tradition, Edward II was born at Caernarfon in April 1284 and created Prince of Wales in 1301, with control over Wales and its incomes.

Since then the title has traditionally been held by the eldest son of the monarch, as the King had promised that he would name “a prince born in Wales, who did not speak a word of English”.
