Indonesia prison fire: At least 41 inmates dead after huge blaze breaks out in cell block

    In the early hours on Wednesday morning, a large blaze tore through the prison in the capital of Jakarta, taking the lives of 41 inmates.

    The Tangerang prison is situated on the outskirts of Jakarta and is designated for drug offenders, the Indonesian Justice Ministry has said.

    Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire that originated at Block C.

    The prison reportedly is designed to house 1,225 but on the night of the fire had more than 2,000, Rika Aprianti, spokesperson for the corrections department at the Justice Ministry, revealed.
