According to the Daily Telegraph, the decision was taken in light of the COVID restrictions still in place.

Royal sources told the newspaper the Queen had decided to watch the race on television because it will not be a “traditional Derby day”.

One said: “It’s a Derby but it’s not a traditional Derby day.

“It’s not going to be what it normally is so the Queen has decided she would rather watch it at home.”

Tomorrow, when the Epsom Derby takes place, only a restricted number of people will be able to watch the races in person.

The ticketed area has been reduced to just a quarter of its usual size, while the hill where up to 100,000 people normally stand to watch the race has been closed to avoid crowding.

Together with Royal Ascot, the Derby is one of the most anticipated events in the Queen’s diary.
