Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has called on Gareth Southgate to reintroduce Mason Mount to the England side for Saturday’s crucial Euro 2020 quarter-final clash with Ukraine. The 22-year-old did not feature in the historic 2-0 win over Germany on Tuesday afternoon after he was forced to isolate after coming into contact with Scotland’s Billy Gilmour, who later returned a positive COVID-19 test, earlier this month.
Mount’s period of isolation ended on Monday but he was overlooked by Southgate, who opted to start Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling behind Harry Kane up top for the visit of Germany, with Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice occupying the central midfield positions.
Despite England beating the four-time world champions for the first time at a major tournament since 1966 without the Chelsea man on the pitch, Redknapp has suggested that he should return for the trip to Rome to face Ukraine for a place in the last four of the Euros.
When quizzed on Southgate’s team selection for the upcoming fixture, the 74-year-old told Good Morning Britain: “I think he might change it next time, I think there will be changes for the next game.
“I don’t think we’ll see exactly the same 11 that started last night. I think Mason Mount will be fit and available after he had to isolate for the Covid scare.
“I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see Mason Mount back in the team. I think Gareth’s a big fan of his as we all are.
“So we’ll see what he does, but whatever he does he’s coming up with the winning formula.”
