Grass growth slows down in the winter due to the soil temperature dropping, meaning it doesn’t need to be mowed as often. However, one expert has explained that the lawn should be maintained throughout winter to ensure it is “lush and green” next spring.
Fertilising in the autumn will also help to promote green grass.
“These objects can kill or stunt the growth of your grass through winter.”
This is due to their weight or blocking the sunlight from reaching the grass.
Gardeners should also keep an eye out for their lawn waterlogging, which can lead to a number of problems.
It is caused when water sits on the soil surface and drains slowly, or fails to drain at all, damaging the lawn.
The expert added: “This should ensure your grass is slowly being fed throughout the winter months, leaving it lush and green come spring the following year.”
While many might think that the caring of grass stops there for winter, the expert explained that gardeners should maintain their lawn throughout winter.
Brett said: “For maintenance, you should also continue to maintain the lawn through winter, sweeping away any fallen leaves and removing any fallen branches, toys, or remaining furniture.
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) said that this can be controlled by pricking or slitting the surface.
The website reads: “However, a deeper spiking is better, especially with a tool designed to leave holes 10 to 15cm deep.
“These holes can be filled with a free-draining material, such as proprietary lawn top dressings or horticultural sand.
“This allows the water to flow from the surface to deeper, less compacted layers.”
