The latest calculations show that 22% of UK households could be classed as being in fuel poverty, increasing from 4.1 million to 5.3 million.

The hardest-hit areas are Stoke-on Trent, Barking, Dagenham and Newham with other less urban places such as Shropshire and Hertfordshire also badly affected.

Energy price cap levels come into effect today, after announcements in August declared that, following a rise of over 50% in energy costs, customers on default tariffs paying by direct debit would see an increase of £139 to £1,277 and prepayment customers an increase of £153 to £1,309.

Experts have warned that this could lead to fuel poverty becoming ‘endemic to society’.
