The Three Lions overcame a dogged performance from their Scandinavian opponents to prevail 2-1 in the tense semi-final encounter. The winning goal was scored by Harry Kane in extra-time, who slotted in the rebound from his missed penalty to finally slay the brave Danes. England’s victory means they will contest a major tournament final for the first time since winning the World Cup in 1966.

In a post-match discussion on ITV, the former Man United and England star appeared to take a swipe at the Prime Minister, suggesting he lacked real leadership qualities.

Mr Neville told ITV Sport: “The standard of leaders in this country the past couple of years has been poor, looking at that man (Southgate), he’s everything a leader should be, respectful, humble, he tells the truth.”

Then, turning his attention back to the team, he added. “We’ve never done this before in our lifetimes.

“These lads have to focus but we don’t have to.

“This country is bouncing, national holiday, enjoy yourselves!”

Social media channels were flooded with messages of high praise for England’s coach, as fans revelled in the team’s performance.

The mighty Lions’ exploits were also celebrated by former England stars, many of whom had experienced bitter disappointment in international tournaments.

Gary Lineker took to Twitter to express his delight at the semi-final result.

He wrote: “Unbelievable. Finally after all these years. So bloody wonderful.”
