United require elite signings rather than players for the future and the sales of some surplus stars could make more high-profile deals a more realistic possibility.

The likes of Anthony Martial, Diogo Dalot, Jesse Lingard, Phil Jones and Andreas Pereira could all be offloaded without serious damage to Solskjaer’s bloated squad.

Martial has not featured since picking up an injury and is behind Edinson Cavani in Solskjaer’s pecking order.

Doubts remain over the Frenchman’s long-term suitability and there have been suggestions he could be sacrificed to fund new players.

Dalot, Lingard, Jones and Pereira, meanwhile, are never likely to force their way back into Solskjaer’s first-team plans.
