Failure to check a car for simple issues could see your vehicle deemed to be in a dangerous condition. This can see drivers issued penalties of up to £2,500 and three penalty points on a driving licence.

He said: “After a year of uncertainty for the public, it’s great to see people taking a well-deserved break and heading out on road trips.
“However, it’s important that before starting the journey, drivers carry out some simple quick checks to ensure their vehicle is in a safe condition to drive long distances.”
Check for a slow puncture
Experts warn slow punctures can go undetected for a long time which is likely to put many road users in severe danger.

Check for possible clutch issues
Failing clutch pedals can be a common issue but one which could be a major safety risk for road users.
A clutch cable experiencing problems will struggle to move when the pedal is pressed.
Drivers who continue to press on a broken pedal could cause the cable to break meaning it will become inoperable.
Leasing options warn driving with faulty clutch cables can cause a serious accident.
Check for a coolant leak
Possible leaks could reduce the radiator’s ability to cool the coolant, causing engines to run hotter than usual.
This can cause severe damage to the car and are likely to lead to breakdowns.
When conducting your car checks, drivers are urged to check their engine bay for any signs of leaks.
Weeping around the lower parts of the front bumper could also be a sign of an issue.
Check for alternator issues
The alternator helps supply electricity to the vehicle and plays an important part in its running.
One of the most common signs of a failure is dimming and flickering headlights.
An electrical speedometer is also unlikely to work with alternator issues while your ignition warning light will appear.
