Ewan McGregor revealed during a talk show visit Monday that he met with Liza Minnelli ahead of portraying her late friend Halston in a Netflix miniseries.

The 50-year-old Scottish actor during a remote appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers was asked by Meyers, 47, about meeting with people who knew the famous fashion designer first-hand in preparation for the role.

‘Yes, I was really lucky. I mean, there are some people in his world, who kindly sat down with me, people he worked with. But you know, the most amazing friendship he had was with Liza Minelli and they had a really beautiful best friendship. And I wanted to meet her, I wanted to meet her anyway, and reassure her that he was in good hands, he was in safe hands, with me,’ McGregor said.

He added that he wanted Minnelli, 75, to know ‘that I respected their friendship and I understood that he was very important to her’.

McGregor said that Minnelli asked him to keep their conversation private and he would always respect her request.

‘But I got, what she gave to me, was the great love she had for him and I could see through her, you know, the great love he had for her,’ McGregor said.

McGregor said their meeting was ‘really beautiful’ and shortly after he went off to start playing Halston.

‘It’s a responsibility, you know, when you’re playing somebody who’s lived and to get him right. And I was lucky that she was able to share some of her memories of him with me,’ McGregor said.

The five-episode miniseries premiered on May 14 on Netflix.

Krysta Rodriguez, 36, portrays Minnelli in the miniseries that was executive produced by Ryan Murphy, 55.

Halston was frequently photographed at New York City hotspot Studio 54 with his close friends Liza, Bianca Jagger and Andy Warhol.

Minnelli’s use of recreational drugs in the 1970s was noted by the late Warhol, who in a 1978 diary entry recalled the actress and singer arriving at Halston’s house and imploring the host to ‘Give me every drug you’ve got.’

The family of the legendary designer earlier this month slammed the Netflix limited series for allegedly failing to accurately reflect his life and work.

Big responsibility: 'It's a responsibility, you know, when you're playing somebody who's lived and to get him right. And I was lucky that she was able to share some of her memories of him with me,' McGregor said

The Halston Archives, run by Halton’s niece, Lesley Frowick, derided the series as ‘fictional’ and said it was ‘inaccurate’ in a scathing rebuke.

‘The Halston Archives remains the only definitive and comprehensive source on the man and his legacy as the personally appointed custodian of his private papers and effects,’ the statement continued.

Despite the Halston Archives’ issues with the upcoming miniseries, it failed to specify any of the alleged inaccuracies or falsehoods in the series.

Halston, born Roy Halston Frowick, first rose to prominence after designing the pillbox hat worn by Jacqueline Kennedy at the 1961 presidential inauguration of her husband John F. Kennedy.
