Everton are set to appoint Rafa Benitez as manager next week after a critical breakthrough in negotiations on Saturday. Despite heavy backlash from Everton fans over his past as Liverpool boss, the Spaniard will imminently enter the Goodison Park hot seat.

According to Sky Sports News, Benitez is expected to be announced as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor early next week.

The 61-year-old has agreed essential components of his contract, and all that’s seemingly left to do is sign on the dotted line.

Everton have been without a manager since Ancelotti’s sudden exit to return to Real Madrid at the start of the month.

Benitez has been out of work since January when he left Chinese club Dalian Professional due to concerns over his family’s welfare amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

He’s known to enjoy living on Merseyside, though, and he could be the perfect fit for a club like Everton, ready to take the next step.

A source close to the situation has stressed just how important an appointment it is.

Benitez’s imminent Everton arrival has been described as the biggest ‘gamble’ football on Merseyside has ever seen.

“This is the greatest gamble in the history of Merseyside football,” the Independent was told.

“It’ll either be a shambles or a huge success. There’s no middle ground.”

Benitez will arrive at the Toffees 11 years after he left Liverpool, where he enjoyed great success and brought bragging rights to the red side of the city.

The Spanish boss led the Reds to an FA Cup and, more notably, one of their six Champions League titles during his six-year stint at the helm.

It’s for this reason why his impending appointment has been met by mass discontent among Everton supporters.

Angry fans have left messages around Goodison Park using graffiti to express their discontent over a former Liverpool manager taking charge of their team.
