The football lover decorated his home with 23 large red and white flags to celebrate Euro 2020, with some people travelling from the south coast to see the sight at the West Bromwich property. The man, who has asked to remain anonymous because of a backlash, said that he “just wants to make people smile” but that his efforts had resulted in fury from some unhappy people.

As reported by Birmingham Live, he said that he had been the victim of online abuse and threats because of the flags – with someone even threatening to smash his windows.

The man said: “I didn’t do it to offend anyone – I just wanted to make people smile.

“I haven’t missed a single match since the Euros have started. I don’t drink so I don’t go to pub gardens, I just watch it from home with the family.

“Neighbours seem to love it and said well done but a few people said nasty things online and threatened to smash my windows.”

The backlash has left the Euro 2020 fan confused and disappointed, as he did not intend to be perceived as a “hooligan” but was instead trying to spread positivity.

He added: ”I’m not a hooligan, I’m just a friendly person, anyone from any nationality can come. The other day a bloke from Weymouth came to take pictures of the house.

“Whenever there is a tournament like the Euros or World Cup I’ll stick the flags up. It’s not expensive, just a couple of quid per flag.

“I like to see people smile, drivers have been beeping their horns and it makes people happy as they drive past.”

“I don’t do it for attention, I don’t want to be popular, I just love football and want people to enjoy.

“My eldest son loves football too but the others say: ‘Dad, you’ve embarrassed me’. They won’t walk through the front door and use the backdoor to get into the house.”
