England’s Euro 2020 final against Italy was momentarily paused during the second half because a fan managed to breach security and enter the Wembley Stadium pitch.
The Three Lions led during their first major final since 1966 thanks to Luke Shaw’s first-ever goal for his country.
Manchester United defender Shaw thumped home Kieran Trippier’s cross inside two minutes to send the nation into raptures.
Gareth Southgate’s side were excellent in the opening 45 minutes and limited Italy to very few chances.
Federico Chiesa came close to testing England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford but fired wide from 25 yards.
But Roberto Mancini’s players improved in the second half and forced an equaliser after applying immense pressure.
Leonardo Bonucci was first to a rebound and thrashed home after Pickford had tipped a header onto the post.
Italy were the better side in the second half but there was a brief pause in play while stewards forced a fan off the pitch.
The broadcast, which is given to the BBC and ITV by UEFA, showed a fan sprinting onto the field from the top left of the screen around the 85th minute.
After a few seconds without realisation, referee Bjorn Kuipers stopped the play with England building an attack out from defence.
Stewards tackled the fan, who was holding a red shirt in his left hand and a mobile phone in his right.
The break in the game coincidentally helped England as it allowed them to regain their composure after suffering severe pressure in the final 20 minutes of normal time.
A 1-1 draw after 90 minutes meant that the final headed to extra-time.
Southgate’s side have been excellent during Euro 2020 and fully deserved their place in the final.
They have beaten Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Ukraine and Denmark to reach the Wembley showdown.
It is the country’s first major tournament final since the 4-2 win over West Germany in 1966 and the first time that they have reached the showpiece event of a European Championship.
