England could have new World Cup opponents amid growing calls for Iran to be banned from the competition over the Iranian Government’s brutal response to protests within the country. A formal request to FIFA and president Gianni Infantino has been made to suspend the Iranian Football Federation immediately, something which would effectively suspend the nation from Qatar.
Iran is currently in a state of political turmoil amid protests and civil unrest over the death of 22-year-old woman Mahsa Amini in police custody, who was arrested for wearing an ‘improper’ hijab. There are rapidly growing demands for increased rights for women within the country while many are also calling for the Government to be overthrown after 43 years in power.
The Government’s response has been widely condemned after tear gas and live rounds were used on protestors. At least 215 people, including at least 23 children, are believed to have been killed as a result of the authorities brutality while internet access and social media have been closed down to try and quell discontent.
The current situation has led to growing calls that Iran should be banned from the World Cup with Iranian sportsmen and women among those arguing in favour. A formal request has been sent to the FIFA council and president Gianni Infantino to suspend Iran from the association immediately, effectively banning the Middle Eastern nation from November’s showpiece in Qatar.

Labour MP Chris Bryant, the chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Russia, has also called on Iran to be banned, citing their support of Russia in the Ukraine war.
“Sporting authorities around the world and in every sport should be looking very carefully at Iran’s direct engagement and support for Putin in his illegal invasion of Ukraine,” he told the Telegraph. “Dictatorial regimes relish sporting success. We should deny them that opportunity.”
