The Tesla CEO gave a cryptic “maybe” response when asked if he would consider constructing a logistics warehouse in Germany. It sparked a Twitter frenzy following reports the Tesla CEO was planning to build one of his giga-factories in the central European industrial powerhouse. German media reported that a car and battery factory is to be built near Berlin, and another project by the car manufacturer could soon follow.

The news that Tesla is to build a major plant in Grünheide near Berlin has seen a spike in interest in the electric car maker’s products.

Originally, Tesla wanted to start production on its German-based car plant this summer.

However, in an interview with Reuters TV during a visit to the construction site in May, Mr Musk said: “It currently looks like we can start manufacturing at the end of the year.”

On Thursday the company has applied for approval for the construction of the Berlin car factory.

The battery factory is to be built on the Tesla site in Grünheide near the car factory.

Tesla is also planning to expand its car-press shop with two more factory press lines.

According to the application, the car body factory shop will be reduced to one production line.

The company are also introducing proposals to build new production lines for the manufacture and painting of plastic components for Tesla cars.

The car-maker will begin making plastic bumper and rear-view mirror covers in Germany.

Tesla plans to build around 500,000 models of the compact Model 3 and Model Y vehicle series in Germany every year.

However, German media has reported that a final decision as to when Tesla will be granted permission to expand its German operations remains unclear.
