Using a dishwasher lightens the load on household chores, saving on hand washing every item, but by incorrectly loading the appliance, you could be reducing its efficiency. Babs, known as @Brunchwithbabs on TikTok has revealed “the proper way to load your dishwasher so that each and every dish comes out sparkling clean”.

The grandma of eight explained two common mistakes people often make before they even get to putting dishes into the appliance.

She said: “Did your Mom ever teach you the do’s and don’ts for loading the dishwasher?

“Here’s two don’ts before you start loading. Scrape don’t rinse. Not only will you save water but the detergent will have something to adhere to.

“Don’t put things in the dishwasher that don’t belong there like wood objects or your good kitchen knives.”

Babs added: “If you have a stabiliser make sure you put that down as well. For tall wine glasses, don’t forget to drop your top shelf down before closing.

“To lower your top rack just push in and press down. To return to the original position just raise it up.”

Moving to the lower shelf, all items should face inwards and the spray arm should be unobstructed.

Babs explained that this allows the spray arm to reach every single item and ensure a thorough clean.

She added: “I don’t put my pots and pans in the dishwasher, but if you do, they belong in the front.”

For the cutlery tray, Babs advises placing knives with the blade facing downwards “for safety”.

She also recommends grouping cutlery together, with all spoons in one section, knives in one and forks in another.

This will speed up the process of unloading and putting your kitchen items away.
