Donald Trump faces a subpoena from the group responsible for investigating the January 6 “insurrection” that followed the 2020 elections.
In a blow for the Republican Party, the Congressional January 6 has reportedly planned a vote on whether to issue the ex-President with a legal summons.
Speaking to NBC News, a source familiar with the committee’s plans said the group was still looking to conduct an interview with Mr Trump and his vice president Mike Pence.
The panel recently held what many believe will be its last meeting ahead of the critical midterm elections this year.
The vote on whether to issue the subpoena will come during today’s hearing, reporters have confirmed.
The hearing, the ninth since the committee started conducting interviews in 2021, started earlier today at 1pm ET (6pm BST).
US-based networks CNN, CBS and C-SPAN will carry the hearing tonight, while YouTube carries a live stream.
Democratic House of Representatives congresswoman Zoe Logren teased what the meeting would cover on Tuesday.
She told CNN people can expect to hear about “close ties between people in Trump world and some of these extremist groups”.
Ms Logren added: “We’re going to be going through, really some of what we’ve already found, but augmenting with new material that we’ve discovered through our work throughout this summer.”
Her Republican colleague Liz Cheney, while delivering her opening remarks, said panel members would primarily address Mr Trump’s role in the January 6 insurrection.
She said: “None of this would have happened without him. He was personally and substantially involved in all of it.
“Today, we will focus on President Trump’s state of mind, his intent, his motivations, and how he spurred others to do his bidding.
“And how another Jan 6 could happen again if we do not take necessary action to prevent it.”
The hearing was initially postponed in September due to Hurricane Ian.
