A senior Labour MP has been suspended from the parliamentary party after allegations of bullying staff.

Sir Keir Starmer took action to remove the whip from Christina Rees after claims about her conduct were made.

She will sit as an independent in the House of Commons while an internal investigation is carried out.

Ms Rees said in a statement: “There has been a complaint made against me to the Labour party, which is under investigation and I am therefore under an administrative suspension until the process is concluded.

“I’m not aware of the details of the complaint but I am fully cooperating with the investigation.”

Ms Rees served in the shadow cabinet when Jeremy Corbyn was Labour leader.

The close ally of the Islington North MP was shadow secretary of state for Wales from 2017 until 2020.

The Labour Party says it does not comment on individual cases as disciplinary procedures are confidential.
