Clifford The Big Red Dog was an absolute unit in children’s books read by millions since 1963 and no doubt fans of the Scholastic book and television series are excited to see how the giant pooch would be portrayed on the big screen.
But perhaps they should shrink those expectations.
The Clifford The Big Red Dog trailer was released on Tuesday as it almost instantly began trending No. 1 on Twitter for several different reasons including skepticism regarding the pup’s size, the fact that a BTS song was used in the clip, and even comparisons to Godzilla.

The two-minute clip stars Darby Camp as Emily Elizabeth, who is Clifford’s owner, and Jack Whitehall who portrays her uncle Casey.
Emily is having trouble fitting in at school and goes to a mysterious tent to find a new pet with her uncle.
It is then where she comes face-to-face with the tiny red puppy and wants to keep it before asking Mr. Bridwell (played by John Cleese) how big it will get.

Then a single tear drops from her eyes but unbeknownst to her it began to sparkle as it dropped down and hit Clifford’s nose.

The perils of being a giant dog owner are showcased through the rest of the clip as he chases and deflates a human bubble ball containing a person and even accidentally puts a regular-sized pug in his mouth.
Many social media users were left unimpressed by the size of the CGI pup as one shared an image of a cover of one of the Clifford The Big Red Dog books with the caption: ‘They didn’t even make him a gigantic dog like in the books what the hell is even the point. Now he’s Clifford the clydesdale-sized dog.’

Others just did not like the general appearance of the movie character as a Twitter poster wrote: ‘you know, some things just aren’t meant to translate from animation to live action and clifford is one of them.’
Another said: ‘a dog this big and this red was never meant to exist outside of a 2D format, the act of rendering clifford in 3D is grotesque and borderline body horror.’
Despite skepticism ‘Clifford’ trended at No. 1 in the US as a lot of it had to do with the BTS track Dynamite being used in the soundtrack of the trailer.
