The Prime Minister said he was “shocked” at video footage being shared online which showed the Chief Medical Officer being harassed by a group of men.
At one point the scientist appears to be placed into a headlock as he attempts to move away from the men.
Reacting angrily, Mr Johnson said: “I’m shocked at seeing the despicable harassment of Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty.
“I condemn the behaviour of these thugs.
“Our hard-working public servants should not have to face this kind of intimidation on our streets and we will not tolerate it.”
