Chelsea have released a statement confirming that right-back Reece James will not undergo surgery on his knee having sustained an injury whilst playing against AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday night. The defender will spend an extended period on the sidelines though, putting his spot in England’s World Cup squad in jeopardy.
Whilst trying to tackle Theo Hernandez at the San Siro in midweek, James fell to the ground clutching his knee. The former Wigan loanee attempted to continue having received medical attention, though it soon became clear that he would need to be replaced – with captain Cesar Azpilicueta coming on.
The Blues did not fear that James had sustained a significant injury, though scans showed that he could be forced to have surgery on the issue. Though Chelsea have now confirmed that is not the case, having seen a specialist on Saturday.
Graham Potter’s side released a statement saying: “Following the knee injury sustained in our away match against AC Milan, Reece has received treatment from the Chelsea medical department and visited a specialist this weekend. After consultation between all parties, Reece will now undergo a rehabilitation programme and is expected to be out for eight weeks.”
