The simple rule could catch out hundreds of drivers who may share the towing responsibility on a family holiday. The rule could also catch out those who change their number plates and forget to purchase an updated design for their trailer.
GOV.UK said drivers “must” display the same number plate as the towing vehicle.
They also warned drivers who failed to display number plates correctly could be punished with fines of £1,000 expected.
They said: “Your trailer must display the same number plate as the vehicle you’re towing it with.
“If you’re towing more than one trailer, the number plate must be fixed to the trailer at the back.”

They said: “There is no difference between a standard rear number plate and a caravan plate.
“So you can select the best fit for you and buy today.
“You can change the plates on your caravan if you are towing with a different vehicle.
“Though it must be replaced with another set of road legal number plates.”
They said: “Do not take this lightly as it is a serious offence to tow a caravan whilst displaying different number plates on each vehicle.
“This offence can lead to a substantial fine.
“As well as having a number plate that is identical to the one on your car, it is also a legal requirement to ensure that your caravan number plate is transparent in the sense that it is easily visible with no marks or scratches that could hinder the view of police officers and security cameras.”
