Drivers in and around cities like London, Birmingham and Bath are already well versed with a form of a CAZ tax, but other cities are set to bring forward plans for pollution reducing schemes. London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is probably the most well-known clean air zone in the UK, with Transport for London (TfL) expanding it to an area 18-times larger than the original zone in October.
Following Oxford, Bristol is set to launch their CAZ in October 2021.
Private cars, taxis and vans will be charged £9 per day and buses, coaches and HGVs will be charged £100 per day.
Owners of older vehicles will be able to apply for a one-year exemption.
A CAZ is set to be launched in southwest Portsmouth in the Autumn.
Bradford is set to introduce a Clean Air Zone in January 2022.
Non-compliant vans would be charged £9, non-compliant taxis £12.50 and non-compliant lorries, buses and coaches £50. There would be no charge for private cars.
Greater Manchester will delay its Clean Air Zone (CAZ) until 2022, a year later than originally planned.
It’s set to be England’s biggest CAZ, spanning 10 local authority areas across Greater Manchester (Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Manchester and Salford).
Sheffield is also set to introduce a CAZ at some point in the near future, although plans have inevitably been affected by the coronavirus.
The CAZ in Sheffield will not charge private cars for entering the city centre.
Buses, HGVs and taxis are responsible for half of the air pollution but only make up 20 percent of traffic and, by focusing on them, the city can reduce air pollution as quickly as possible.
Pollutive LGVs and taxis would be charged £10 a day and £50 per day for coaches, buses and HGVs.
