Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Minister for Business, Energy and Clean Growth said there was “much to do” regarding transport over the coming years. She has backed the planned phase-out of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 as part of a “team effort” to meet climate targets.
Yesterday the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) admitted the shift to electric vehicles is the “biggest challenge’ facing the sector.
They have called for the installation of another 2.3million charging stations by the end of the decade to support market transition.
They have also called for the development of more gigafactories and urged the Government to introduce binding targets on battery production.
They said the “stakes were high” for the automotive industry who relied on drivers making the switch to electric cars.
