Ahead of the final against Italy, the former prime minister of Ireland issued a tweet which some interpreted as a slight towards England. He said: “Enjoying a delicious cup of Italian coffee at the Il Fornaio Italian cafe on Dawson Street. It’s like Little Italy here.” Commenting on the Express.co.uk story, one person said: “Was Ireland in the Euros? Did I miss them?”
Another person said: “Who cares what he thinks!
“Winning or losing at the weekend will make no difference – we will NOT be rejoining the EU and all this spiteful and malicious commentary just shows up the EU trolls for what they are – worthless, childish and pointless.”
A third said: “Does anybody actually listen to him? He was demoted wasn’t he.
“Is he told what to say by his EU masters?”
Another said: “Mr Varadkar is of no consequence just ignore him.”
The Fine Gael leader is Ireland’s Tanaiste, or deputy leader, having been replaced in the top job by Fianna Gail leader Micheal Martin last year as part of the coalition deal which saw the two parties form a government in conjunction with the Greens.
Mr Varadkar’s comments come as England prepares to face Italy in what is the first tournament final the national team has reached since 1966.
Ahead of the game, however, a covid outbreak has been reported in the Italian camp.

“It means that training sessions with the media in attendance have all been cancelled and we are having to make other arrangements.”
Although the camp has been struck by a Covid scare, calls have risen for England to be given a national holiday if Gareth Southgate’s men are triumphant.
Speaking today, the Prime Minister’s spokesman refused to be drawn on whether there are plans to grant a national holiday, or indeed celebrate any potential victory.
Ahead of the final on Sunday, the spokesman refused to comment on plans but insisted they will be revealed at a later date.
A spokesman said: “I don’t want to pre-empt the outcome of Sunday’s match.
“Clearly we want England to go all the way and win the final, and then we will set out our plans in due course.
