Nicola Sturgeon has vowed to hold a second independence referendum, insisting it is a case of “when – not if”. TalkRADIO host Kevin O’Sullivan has urged Boris Johnson to call the SNP bluff. In an interview with Hannah Ord, a research associate at the Adam Smith Institute, Mr O’Sullivan pointed out that England would be better off financially without Scotland.

Mr O’Sullivan pointed to a recent article in The Spectator, which argued that “if Nicola Sturgeon wants independence, she can have it”.

He said: “In fact, the English should declare independence because it would make England a much wealthier nation.

“We give £660 million quid a year to Scotland in subsidies. So Sturgeon would have to persevere without that.

“She wouldn’t get the BBC or the NHS. It is financially illiterate.”

Ms Ord admitted that England would be wealthier without Scotland and that “the strongest arguments against independence are economic”.

However, she argued that “there’s too much that binds our countries together culturally to separate “.

Mr O’Sullivan responded: “I want Scottish independence if the majority of Scots vote for it. I believe in democracy.

“The Conservatives and Unionists get terribly upset with the idea of Scottish independence as if that would be disastrous for the UK financially – it would not!

The Savanta ComRes poll for The Telegraph found only 20 percent “strongly oppose” separation.

The polling also showed “little appetite for the UK Government providing an extra financial incentive to persuade Scotland to stay in the Union”.

Boris Johnson has repeatedly resisted calls to grant permission for another border poll.

He has insisted that the first vote in 2014 was supposed to be a once in a generation event.
