Following a meeting with NATO head Jens Stoltenberg, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK will stand shoulder to shoulder with NATO allies against “threats from the East”. His bold claim came as the UK seeks to bolster military cooperation in an “unpredictable world” following growing threats from China, Russia and Belarus.
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said: “I had the pleasure of visiting the HMS Queen Elizabeth off the coast of Portugal last week.
“That is really an impressive aircraft carrier demonstrating the commitment to defence.
“And we need that commitment because we live in a more unpredictable world with more global competition.
“And therefore need to strengthen our alliance and that is exactly what we are going to do.”
“I look forward to welcoming you (Boris) and other NATO leaders to Brussels in two weeks’ time, where we will demonstrate our strength and bold and forward-looking agenda.”
The Prime Minister said: “NATO allies have been really outstanding in supporting the UK against the Salisbury poisonings.”
He also added how the NATO alliance will be a defence against “threats from the East” in a strong statement levied at Russia and Belarus.
Mr Johnson added the NATO alliance will protect members against cyber-attacks from “eastern borders” and labelled the recent Belarus hijacking “outrageous” as he called for the release of journalist Roman Protasevic.
