The Prime Minister will update MPs in the chamber on the first day back following the summer recess.

Mr Johnson has faced intense criticism from politicians on all sides for the failure to predict how quickly the Taliban would sweep through Afghanistan.

Speaking in the Commons the Prime Minister will say the efforts of British troops in the region have helped prevent terror attacks being launched against the UK.

“Thanks to their efforts, no terrorist attack against this country or any of our Western allies has been launched from Afghanistan for twenty years,” he will say.

“They fulfilled the first duty of the British armed forces – to keep our people safe.”
