Boris Johnson spoke out on the scandal surrounding former Health Secretary Matt Hancock during a campaign visit to Johnstone’s Paints Limited in Batley. The Prime Minister was pressured by the opposition parties to fire Mr Hancock after images exposed the Health Secretary having an affair and breaking coronavirus measures. Mr Johnson defended his inaction and claimed that the proceedings went at the correct pace.

He highlighted the speed of the transition as the story came out on Friday, Mr Hancock resigned by the end of Saturday and that same day a new Health Secretary was appointed.

Mr Johnson said: “I read the story on Friday and we’ve got a new Health Secretary in post on Saturday and I think that’s about the right pace to proceed in a pandemic.”

The Prime Minister was also questioned whether he has used his personal email for Government issues, an accusation currently levied at Mr Hancock.

The Labour Party have demanded an investigation into these allegations against Mr Hancock and Health Minister Lord Bethel.

Mr Johnson insisted he would not comment on such issues.

He said: “I don’t comment on how I conduct Government business.

“But I can tell you that we in this Government are getting on with focusing on the people’s priorities.”

The Prime Minister shifted the topic to how hard the Government was working to see life return to normal after the restrictions.

“So that shows that the vaccination programme has been working and I’m very, very encouraged by that.

“What I think we should do now is continue to take a cautious but irreversible approach and use the next three-and-a-half weeks or so to make sure that we get another five million vaccinations into people’s arms.

“We can build up even higher that wall of protection, and then go forward on July 19 as a terminus date when I think that we will be able, really, to return to pretty much life before Covid.

    “That’s what we’re working towards.”
