Testing sites and airports in Portugal are facing chaos ahead of the change in travel restrictions. The new rules, which will come into force on Tuesday, state that people returning to the UK from Portugal must self-isolate for 10 days.
The UK Government changed the travel guidance last Thursday, giving Britons just four days to return before the change in rules.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the Government was “going to try to allow people to travel”.
He added: “But we’ve got to be cautious and we’ve got to continue to put countries on the red list, on the amber list, when that is necessary.”
Tim Alderslade, of Airlines UK, criticised the move, labelling the Government’s traffic light method a “pretend traffic light system.”
He told the Times: “They have ignored their own recommendations and led an entire industry down the garden path.
“It’s clear that many in government don’t want international travel this summer.
“They should have the decency to tell us so we and our passengers can plan accordingly.”
British holidaymakers in Lisbon have branded the Government’s decision “unfair”.
