Mice often seek shelter in warm, enclosed spaces, like your house. There are many things you can do to keep mice out of your house and protect your home from these pesky rodents. As it turns out, there are several smells that these pests cannot stand, which means you can use them to your advantage. From essential oils to common household items, many odours will send mice running in the other direction.
Once people find mice in their home it can be extremely difficult to completely get rid of the problem. Plus, once they have built their hidden nesting area it only gets harder.
That is why it is best to take steps to prevent an infestation before it can even happen.
So why do mice enter homes? Pest control experts at Sigma Pest control claimed: “One of the biggest reasons mice enter your home is because they are looking for food. And one of the easiest places to find food is in a garbage bin that has not been properly sealed.
“Make sure to keep your garbage bins tightly sealed at all times and do not leave any bags or cans open. This will make it difficult for mice to get to the food and will keep them from entering your home.”

Cinnamon
Cinnamon is another scent that mice hate. Rodents are susceptible to smells, and cinnamon’s potent scent can be overwhelming.
The experts said: “You can sprinkle cinnamon around your home, or you can use it to make a rat-repellent spray. Add a few drops of cinnamon oil to water and spray it around your home.”
White vinegar
The pungent smell of white vinegar is a natural way to repel not only mice, but rats too. The pest control pros said: “These pests cannot stand the sharp scent of vinegar, which means it can be used as an effective rodent repellent.”
Soak some cotton balls in vinegar and place them around areas where you think the rodents might be entering the home. Vinegar can also be used to clean areas where rodents have been as this will help remove their scent.

Citronella
Citronella is a well-known mosquito repellent, but it can also be used to keep mice away.
The experts said: “These animals hate the lemon-like smell of citronella, so using it around your home can help to deter them.”
You can buy citronella candles or oils or plant citronella plants around the home. These plants will not only help keep rodents away but also make outdoor spaces more pleasant.
Bleach
In addition to natural smells, there are also chemical scents that ward off these pests, one of which being bleach.
The pest control gurus said: “Bleach is a standard household product that can be used as a rodent repellent.
“The pungent smell of bleach is unpleasant to these animals, so using it around your home can help keep them away.
“You can mix it with water and spray it around your home, then monitor the area to see if the rodents are repelled after a few days.”
Be sure to use bleach safely, as it can be toxic if inhaled or ingested. Wear gloves and a mask when using this cleaning product, so you don’t breathe in the fumes.
