Bleach is one of the most common cleaning products for tough stains and odours – particularly in the bathroom to blitz porcelain and ceramic surfaces. While it is often effective for clearing clogged sink drains, dirty toilets and mouldy surfaces, experts have revealed that natural remedies are much more effective for long-lasting results. Express.co.uk spoke to cleaning experts to find the most common ingredients you can use instead of chemical cleaners.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Alex Beckwith, bathroom cleaning expert at Victorian Plumbing said: “Bathroom odours are common in many homes.

“With the build-up of humidity and dampness, strong smells can begin to form making it important to keep your bathroom looking and smelling fresh.”

He explained that “many common household items” double up as natural deodorisers – and you probably already have them on hand.

Heather Nixon, regulatory, NPD and sustainability manager, at green cleaning company Bio-D, said: “After boiling a pot of water, drop in a couple of sliced lemons and leave the natural deodoriser to work its magic.

“The lemon will infuse your bathroom with a fresh citrus scent, eliminating any lingering smells.”

    Matches

For a super quick yet long-lasting fix, Alex recommended using just one match.

He said: “In case of emergencies, the smoke from a match is an easy way to mask and diffuse the smell. Opening a window can also help to create an airflow for the smoke to filter through the room.”

    Baking soda and vinegar

Eliminating existing odours is easy with varying ingredients, though a mixture of three common cleansers will work best in the long run.

Alex said: “Prevention is always better than a remedy so making sure to clean your toilet properly is key. A solution of bicarbonate of soda, white vinegar and lemon juice is always a promising choice.”

He explained that the “magic” happens as the soda reacts with the white vinegar, breaking down the acid in the soda to release carbon dioxide that can lift many hard stains and dirt.

He added: “Using lemon juice helps with this reaction and also masks the smell of the solution. If you need further help to mask the smell, using essential oil with it always helps.”
