Hanna Dillon rushed home after neighbours called her to say that workmen were installing a four-foot high box in front of her house. It replaced a much smaller box which had been placed outside her home in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, for more than 20 years.

Ms Dillon, 32, has lived at the property for the past eight years and spent a lot of money improving it.

Following her criticism of the telecomms giant Virgin Media released a statement addressing the issue.

Virgin Media said the box merely replaced an older one and they had offered to move the box in the past but after providing a quote, Ms Dillon did not pursue it.

A spokeswoman for Virgin Media said: “The cabinet outside Ms Dillon’s home has been located in the same position for more than 20 years.

“It is a massive box. How am I supposed to get in and out the driveway with that in the way?”

Ms Dillon said she has since applied to North East Lincolnshire Council for a dropped kerb in order to move her car onto her driveway.

She also claims that she pleaded with the workmen to move the box across slightly after a neighbour agreed to have it next to her boundary wall.

She added: “I had to leave work in Immingham to ask them to move it. But they just kept laughing. I cried. I am going to lose money on the house now.

“They will have to move it when I get the dropped kerb.”

The new box is an upgraded connection to the cable TV network, but it is much bigger than the previous one.

But it restricts her driveway access which has infuriated her: “It is a massive box. How am I supposed to get in and out the driveway with that in the way? I can’t believe it.”

Virgin Media is among several providers which are working to upgrade the UK’s internet network.

Part of this involves replacing copper wires with fibre optic cables – which allow far greater speeds.

The Covid pandemic and the work-from-home revolution has only added urgency to this drive – which also seeks to honour the Government’s election pledge of “levelling up” the UK’s economy.
