BBC Newsnight host Kirsty Wark grilled the SNP’s John Swinney on the lack of a “grander plan” from the Scottish Government when it comes to fighting Covid. In a tense clash last night, Ms Wark told the SNP’s Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Covid recovery Scotland cannot simply “keeping locking down”. Mr Swinney said the Government was looking at focused testing and increased vaccinations instead of restrictions for local outbreaks in the future.

He said that the SNP wanted “to avoid level three lockdowns at all possible costs”.

Mr Swinney added: “By the end of this next week we can hopefully take the city of Glasgow out of level three restrictions”.

However, this prompted Ms Wark to hit out: “John Swinney, we are going to have spikes.

“We cannot keep locking down and keep going into level three lockdowns.”

She continued: “What is the grander plan as the Covid recovery secretary for a more targeted approach?”

    “What will it be?”

The senior SNP official said focused testing and increased vaccinations will help Scotland “make sure we get on top of particular outbreaks so we don’t have to use the much wider instruments of restrictions”.

On Friday, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed there was still concern about an outbreak of the Indian variant of the virus in Glasgow.

The level three restrictions mean people are not allowed to meet in each other’s homes, and pubs and restaurants are not able to sell alcohol indoors.

The decision has sparked a backlash among business owners, who claim they are struggling to survive after spending 270 days under tough restrictions.

They have criticised the Scottish government for not giving them more financial support.

Opposition parties have also demanded urgent action to get the city back to normal.
