Eyewitnesses told the newspaper that there were several women and children on the hanging bridge when it snapped.
Amit Jhala, a senior administrator at the state-run hospital to where victims had been taken stated: “We can confirm that 30 people have lost their lives, many have been rescued from the river and some are still missing.”
India’s President Droupadi Murmu said in a message of condolence: “The tragedy in Morbi, Gujarat has left me worried.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the affected people. Relief and rescue efforts will bring succour to the victims.”
