Adrian Mannarino went down with a bad ankle injury in his Wimbledon clash with Roger Federer on Tuesday evening and was forced to withdraw at the start of the fifth set.. Federer had taken the first set and looked on course to move up to a 2-0 lead in the second as the set headed into a tiebreak.
Mannarino came back though and levelled the match before stunning the crowd in the third to take a 2-1 lead against the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
It was all on Federer to make something happen in the fourth and he stepped up his game when it mattered most.
Mannarino was struggling to cope with Federer who had just picked up the break on his opponent.
Mannarino, trying to stay in the match, attempted to chase down a baseline shot from Federer when his ankle collapsed underneath him.
There was a hush on Centre Court while Federer also looked unsure what to do as he stood at the net.
Mannarino lay on the floor motionless and in clear discomfort for several minutes before returning to his chair.
He then underwent a brief medical timeout with his physio and was able to get back to his feet and return to his side of the court to continue play.
A huge roar erupted from the Centre Court crowd as they showed their support for the 33-year-old.
