Amid the uproar over the peerages given to Conservative Party donors, Mr O’Neill has called for the removal of the upper house of Parliament. In a furious outburst, Mr O’Neill insisted the only true democratic solution to the House of Lords is “abolition”. He also put forward a referendum on the House of Lords, which he claimed would “galvanise” the public.
Writing for The Spectator: “It’s time to get real about the Lords.
“Let’s quit all the talk of reform. You can’t polish a you-know-what.
“The only true democratic solution is abolition.
“The people should at the very least have a say. So how about it, Boris: a referendum on the Lords?
“The question would be simple: Retain or Abolish.
“Such a vote would galvanise the public and stir up democratic debate.
“It would enrich the political life of this country to an extraordinary degree.
“Let us plebs sit in judgment for once.”

“Any investigation must uncover any process or link between these donations and the subsequent appointment of these individuals to the House of Lords.”
The investigation her references claimed 16 of the Conservative party’s treasurers have moved into the House of Lords.
Indeed, the investigation found 22 of the part’s main financial backers had been given peerages since 2010.
One insider told The Times, once a donor surpasses £3million, they are likely to receive a peerage.
The insider added: “The truth is the entire political establishment knows this happens and they do nothing about it.
“The most telling line is, once you pay your £3 million, you get your peerage.”
