Fruit flies can show up at any time of year, but they show up in force during the late summer and early autumn months due to their attraction to ripe or rotting food. As the name would suggest, they can often be found congregating around fruit bowls.

Gina, who runs the healthy lifestyle blog Skinny Taste (@SkinnyTaste), shared an “easy” hack to get rid of fruit flies with her TikTok audience of 319.5K followers.

She captioned the video, stating: “How to get rid of fruit flies. You’re welcome!”

In the video, Gina explained that you don’t need to shell out for expensive traps or products to deter fruit flies.

Instead, you might already have the solution tucked away in a kitchen cupboard.

In the case of both vinegars, the fruit flies are attracted to the scent and so will fly into the solution.

However, the dish soap then acts as a sealant on top of the water.

The soap cuts the surface tension of the vinegar so the flies will sink and drown.

Commenters on Gina’s video were quick to applaud the hack, sharing their own results.

One user posting under the name @mrsmomlifex3 said: “Works great! I also cover my bowl with plastic wrap with poked holes in it.”

Tina Childers Dixon said apple cider vinegar had better results for her.

She commented: “Apple cider vinegar works best!

“My daughter did her eighth grade science project on which vinegar works best and the science behind this.”
