Weight loss can be a struggle for many but one man from Carmarthenshire has shed 3.5 stone in just three months. Phil Bowen, who is a PE teacher from Llanelli saw his weight increase over the years despite having an active job. Earlier this year, he decided enough was enough and went about transforming himself. Express.co.uk has everything you need to know about how he lost weight in such a short amount of time.
The DA Group diet is an easy-to-follow eating plan that comes with recipes, lists of permitted foods and supporting weight management products.
It was developed by a family company, the Swansea-based DA Group, in 2012 and has gained many happy clients since then.
It’s available in Phil’s local pharmacy – Gravells Pharmacy in Llanelli – where weigh-ins and supporting advice are available – but a big plus point for Phil was the online support that is provided, making it possible for people to follow the diet even if they don’t want to attend weigh-ins.
“What really helped me was looking at the DA Facebook group and seeing what other people were cooking – and there is always someone from The DA Group there to help if you ask,” he says.
“There’s a sense that you’re supported by the DA community.”
Phil stuck faithfully to the diet and was amazed by how quickly the weight came off.
“I couldn’t believe I did it in such a short period of time, but it’s stayed off too,” he explained.
“It’s changed the way I think about food, particularly portion sizes. Before the diet, our portion sizes were way too big. I used to carry on eating even when I was full.
“Psychologically I thought I needed more food, but physiologically I didn’t. That was a massive game changer for me,” Phil admitted.
“I also cut down sugar, reduced my coffee intake and switched to tea because that is a freebie on the diet, so you can drink as much of it as you want.
“I cut out alcohol and found substitutes that I enjoyed, like drinking soda water and lime.”

Phil also revealed how impressed he was by how much food he was still allowed to enjoy on the diet.
“One really good thing was the breakfast – I couldn’t believe that I could have a cooked breakfast that was more or less the same as what I’d have before,” he commented.
“Every weekend there always a day when we’d have one.
“Another godsend was light mayonnaise, which I had with a lot or meals, and the other one was Philadelphia Light. Also, the DA fish and chips recipe was a massive hit, and we still enjoy it regularly now.”
During the diet Phil used the DA Advanced capsules, which provide vitamins and minerals to support the diet, and the DA Reduce capsules, which contain plant fibres that are medically proven to help reduce your appetite and absorb fats and sugars so that your body doesn’t.
“I continue to use Reduce occasionally if I’m going out for a big meal,” he said.
Losing weight has had plenty of benefits for Phil, raising his self-esteem and helping him to get fit.
“I’ve gone back to running – the diet has opened the door to that and I’m feeling better in myself,” Phil added.
“It’s been a massive boost psychologically – I had almost talked myself into the fact that this was my body shape and I was always going to be big.
“Now, I’ve gone from buying 38 waist trousers to buying 34 waist trousers, and I need a belt with them! My t-shirt size is now medium.
“I would 100 percent recommend this diet to others and have recommended it to people in work who asked how I did it.
“Sometimes they even ask whether everything is alright because I’ve lost weight so quickly! I say, ‘Yes, I’ve just changed my lifestyle.’”
What is the DA Advanced diet?
The DA Advanced diet is a healthy eating plan (three balanced meals with snacks) that comes with science-backed products that help support the dieter – for example, by helping them feel full, give extra energy, and providing them with essential vitamins and nutrients.
The plan doesn’t require any calorie counting and is designed to ensure optimal nutrition while dieting, and to make sure you don’t go hungry.
It aims to help people establish lasting healthy eating habits and better portion control.
The DA Group diet was created by family team Emma and Tony Scrivener, their daughter Katie Thomas and Katie’s husband Shaun, who themselves lost 15 stone between them by following the plan.
