America today shot down an Iranian drone which it claimed posed a “threat” to its forces. The “unmanned aerial vehicle” was headed in the direction of Erbil, Iraq, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement.
The body added that it “condemned” the “unprovoked attack”.
It said no forces were wounded or killed during the strikes, which took place at around 2.10pm local time.
Some American troops operate in Iraq at the request of the Iraqi Government.
The CENTCOM reported: “US Central Command condemns the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ unprovoked attack in Iraq’s Erbil Governorate this morning.
“Such indiscriminate attacks threaten innocent civilians and risk the hard-fought stability of the region.
“No US forces were wounded or killed as a result of the strikes and there is no damage to US equipment.
“At approximately 2.10pm local time, US forces brought down an Iranian Mojer-6 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle headed in the direction of Erbil as it appeared as a threat to CENTCOM forces in the area.
“CENTCOM personnel operate in Iraq at the invitation of the Government of Iraq to advise, assist, and enable partner forces in the ensuring the lasting defeat of ISIS.”

In a statement, he revealed that “some of the wounded are in critical condition and death toll could rise”.
The Revolutionary Guards claimed they would continue targeting what it called terrorists in the region.
They said: “This operation will continue with our full determination until the threat is effectively repelled, terrorist group bases are dismantled, and the authorities of the Kurdish region assume their obligations and responsibilities.”
