With autumn now here, many homeowners are likely to have noticed more spiders in their homes as spider mating season continues. The spiders people are most likely to see are Giant House Spiders, Cellar Spiders and False Widow Spiders.
Most UK house spiders are harmless with spider bites being rare. However, many people are scared of the bugs and want them out of their homes.
With this in mind, Anthea Turner has shared how to “spider-proof” your home using natural repellents.
On an episode of ITV’s This Morning, Anthea explained what other factors could be contributing to spiders making their way indoors.
She said: “The thing is there’s a lot of very confused spiders about because it’s raining.

There are also naturally occurring smells spiders “don’t like” which includes peppermint, white vinegar and citrus.
Peppermint
The strong scent of peppermint, and other smells, causes spiders to run away because they smell and taste with their legs.
When they scuttle through these scents, their sense of smell gets confused. Anthea added: “They don’t like peppermint.
“One of the easiest things to do is to get some peppermint. You get the peppermint essence and you pop it in one of these spray bottles.
“You spray it around doorways around windows – anywhere that you think.”
Citrus
Spiders also “don’t like citrus” so for those with lemons in their homes, they can be zested and the peelings can be put on kitchen ledges and window sills.
Anthea added: “The other thing, if you’re using furniture polish, use the one with lemon in because they don’t like that.”
White vinegar
White vinegar is used around the home to not only clean but remove limescale and appliances like washing machines and dishwashers.
The cleaning expert said: “We love white vinegar. We use it so often. Again, put it in [a bottle]. “I would use two parts white vinegar to two parts water and spray that around. Be careful if you spray it on anything that’s laminated but apart from that, you can spray it liberally around.”
