VIEWERS were led on ANOTHER emotional rollercoaster tonight (May 22, 2019) as The Virtues continued its gritty story.
This evening we saw Joe reunited with his long-lost sister – here’s what happened and what questions were left unanswered.
What happened on episode two of The Virtues?
WARNING: Contains spoilers from episode two of The Virtues.
At the beginning of the episode we see Joe make his way to Southern Ireland after getting the ferry to Belfast.
He didn’t have any money, so he walks there – he goes to his sister’s.
His sister Anna and her husband Michael find him lying outside her house, but she doesn’t know who he is.
After she recognises him, he collapses due to lack of food, and after a long sleep the pair have a very emotional reunion.
It’s revealed they were put into a children’s home after their parents died – and that his sister was adopted, while Joe was put in a home for boys.
We then get introduced to Michael’s sister Deena.
Joe then heads to work with Michael on his building site, where he meets a man called Craigy who was once accused of exposing himself in public.
This unnerves Joe, and he tries to avoid him. However, Craigy explains he had a breakdown and he wasn’t a paedophile, and didn’t expose himself to kids.
Meanwhile, Anna reveals that Joe ran away from his boys school 31 years ago, and she never heard from him again and was told he was dead.
Craigy then reveals that he knows Joe as he was at the same boys’ school – The Towers – as him, and he knew he ran off, and that people were saying he had died.
Craigy gets very emotional as he says this and looks in deep pain, like re-telling this story causes him huge trauma.
He then shakes Joe’s hand, and says: “Welcome home Joe, you know I won’t say anything to anyone, I won’t breathe a word of it, thanks Joe.”
The show ends with flashbacks to Joe at the boys’ home, with Joe shaking his head to get rid of the memory.
Three unanswered questions from The Virtues episode two
1) Why did Anna think her brother was dead?
We learnt that Joe found out five years ago where his sister lived because his ex-wife tracked her down online – but it wasn’t until now that he went to find her.
We also found out that while Joe knew his sister was alive, Anna was led to believe her brother was dead.
She told Deena that he had runaway from the boys’ home, but that she was told he was dead.
But who told her this? And why did this person want Anna to believe her brother was dead?
Also how did he end up in Liverpool? Was he sent there?
2) What happened to Joe at the boys’ home?
Joe clearly has traumatic memories from living at the boys’ home, after being separated from his sister.
Throughout both episodes we have seen flashes to him at this home as a child and he is often seen in distress.
Was he abused at the school? Has he gone back to his childhood town to confront his abuser?
3) What does Craigy know?
Craigy revealed that he knew Joe from the boys home.
He then promised to “keep his secret” – but what does he know?
Since episode one, we have been given clues that Joe suffered a traumatic childhood.
The pain in Craigy’s face as he remembered who Joe was hints that the pair of them were abused as children.
Could this be why he fled the boys home and why Anna was told that he was dead?
