Chris Hopson, the Chief Executive of NHS Providers, told Sky News that by comparing the statistics from Bolton Hospital throughout the pandemic the positive effect of the vaccine could be seen clearly. He added that Bolton has not been overwhelmed by the outbreak of the Delta coronavirus variant and has been able to cope with it.
Mr Hopson said: “I can give you a very interesting statistic here.
“If you look at those places that are the leading edge of the way like Bolton, Bolton Hospital last November had 170 COVID-19 inpatients.
“In February this year, it had 150 COVID-19 patients.
“It has now just gone through this Delta surge, the community infection rate is coming down and the numbers in hospital are coming down.
“The peak this time was 50.
“So 50 vs 150 vs 170, you can absolutely see the difference.”
He added: “Crucially, do not equate the numbers, the 50 that they have been through were younger, less required critical care and there was a lower mortality rate.
“They have gone through this curve and they did not get overwhelmed, they coped with it and we think that is very significant.”
